Meta’s VR ambitions have always been a tug-of-war between long-term platform building and short-term cost pressure. That tension is visible again with reports that Meta is cutting staff in Reality Labs and shutting down three VR game studios: Twisted Pixel, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio.
Why these closures hit hard
VR is still a market where content quality drives adoption. When platform owners reduce internal content capacity, the ecosystem becomes more dependent on third-party studios—who may already view VR as higher risk than flat-screen development.
The reported closures include teams associated with notable VR work (including a Resident Evil 4 VR port and the Asgard’s Wrath franchise), which signals that even respected output doesn’t guarantee long-term security when budgets shift.
The strategic pivot: wearables vs metaverse
The reporting frames the cuts as part of reallocating funding from metaverse efforts toward wearables. If true, that implies Meta still believes in embodied computing but may be rethinking how much of that future is “VR-first” versus mixed reality glasses and other devices.
What this means for players
In the short term:
- some projects may be canceled or delayed
- franchise continuity becomes uncertain
- support strategies can shift from “new content” to “maintenance mode”
Over the long term, the biggest question is whether Meta will replace first-party VR content investment with:
- publishing deals for exclusives
- funding programs for indies
- stronger revenue share incentives

Developers take signals from platform holders. Studio shutdowns can increase the perception that VR development is unstable, which can:
